There
are 3 units being the main, and two guest flats, all have
own patios and the perfect solution would be be one person
to rent the entire house and have friends / family in the
other two. All are self contained and can be opened or shut
to flow to the next, depending on the level of intimacy desired
It took no more than minutes for London-based South African
owner to see the dramatic potential of a 50-acre tract of
raw coastal bush and forest only 10km from East London’s
airport. So the former economic consultant and fund manager,
now chairman of a contemporary art gallery and founder of
a theatre production company, bought this private wilderness
and committed to forging an access road through it and called
the property ‘Igoda’ after the river that borders
it.
When it came to building a home, the
owner briefed architects Andrew Makin and Janina Masojada
from design workshop on how he wanted to live, giving them
the opportunity to create a ‘lifestyle and an experience
of
place’ The house, which is currently
on the market, is a triumph of simplicity and modernity
Thanks to materials that minimise visual pollution, the
emphasis is on the quality of light and sound. Massive fold-away
doors and shuttered windows open up to the chorus of the
ocean, river and bush . From the upper deck, the view takes
in a sensual curve of sand and sea; the lower deck engages
with the surrounding indigenous forest.
The inside is purposefully raw: bag-washed
walls and concrete, shell-shade neutrals and double volumes.
The
flooring consists of simple, cement tiles.
He’s filled it with a fascinating collection of lighting,
furnishing and artwork sourced from the 1950s, 60s and 70s
– Swiss, German and Polish artists, neon statements
and Cuban sculptures.
In addition to its beauty, the space
is also immensely practical as a holiday home. It sleeps
12 people
in three distinct zones, each with its
own kitchen. A house that’s unquestionably an architectural
gem – a balance of glass, concrete, wood and volume
- an escape from the pressures of day-to-day living.
The courtyard has a heated pool with
a gas braai, counter top and basin creating a kitchen under
the trees, perfect
for outdoor entertaining. Conical hanging
lamps & soft egg chairs add a stylish touch creating
a lifestyle and
an experience of place. The natural drama
of coastal wilderness proves irresistible to an international
patron of Theatre and the Arts.
